Adolescent and Family Services

The Adolescent and Family Services (AFS) division of RMSC has been in operation since 1998 and was created to provide community-based counseling and support services for adolescents and their families. The overall goal of AFS is to ensure that youth become positive members of the community and help youth strive toward accomplishing and making healthier life decisions about school, family relationships, peer relationships, and choices about drugs/alcohol and sexual intimacy. 

Adolescent and Family Services (AFS) program offers resources for high-risk adolescents and their families through an intensive, flexible and community-based approach to support services.Under the AFS division, RMSC offers a unique program called Baby its For Real. 

Baby It’s For Real 

Baby It’s For Real is an educational program designed to educate adolescent females and males between the ages of 13-17 years of age on how to make responsible decisions about sexual intimacy, pregnancy and parenting at an early age. Baby It’s For Real also teaches adolescents about the reality of raising children and about the required skills for successful parenting.  
The programs design consist of using five modules which address adolescent health, development, self-image/esteem, peer pressure, management of critical relationships (family, friends, significant others), child abuse, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), pregnancy, and parenthood. The five modules include: 

Decision Making – adolescent health and development, self-image/esteem, and healthy relationships

Pregnancy- the experience of being pregnant and the impact

Parenthood  - understanding the knowledge required to care for a child

Life –Skills - learning skills required for independence, such as budgeting, how to find housing, and child care options

Taking Care of Self- issues which young parents must deal with, such as how to continue his/her education, and juggling a social life and the responsibilities of being a parent
