Emergency Shelter

Barbara on the Boston Commons

RMSC’s Family House has been serving the needs of homeless families since 1985.  Originally, a duplex brownstone building, connected only by way of the ground floor the Family House was renovated in 2003 to combine the duplex into a single facility. In addition, the buildings capacity expanded to its current status of 66 family beds.

Besides providing temporary housing, the Family House staff work to promote dignity, self-reliance and a sense of community among residents. Utilizing a broad network of support, residents are able to increase their aptitude to become empowering agents in their own growth and future.

The Family House Shelter serves single parent (both male and female heads of household) and intact families. The family components do vary, but must contain at least one child or a pregnant mother. All homeless families seeking shelter must register with the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) in order to be placed at the Family House Shelter. The Family House accepts adolescent boys over the age of 12 years, and provides culturally sensitive services to all residents.

Through intensive case management and family advocacy work, Family House guests have the opportunity to evaluate and prioritize their needs, set realistic and obtainable goals, and participate in various RMSC programs and services that will further assist them in reaching independence.  In addition, assessments are conducted to ascertain the needs of each member of the family, with a focus on educational, medical, emotional and legal needs that support and stabilize the family. RMSC’s staff utilizes its vital resources and partnerships to complete the “Wraparound” solutions focused model of service adopted by the agency.
